Water Molecules on The Moon
Water molecules have been discovered on the previously thought to be dry moon.
Alongside the discovery of ice on the surface of Mars, H2O has also been discovered in the soil on the moon. This has now been confirmed by three different space probes, after the initial discovery by the Chandrayaan-1 Indian spacecraft last year in October. This moisture seems to be a thin film of water molecules stuck to the Moon’s surface. Scientists say that this water is not a liquid, solid or a gas, it’s something completely different. The presence of these molecules however, could prove to be a potential resource for astronauts both for drinking and rocket fuel amongst other things. This discovery has come as quite a shock to scientists how have long believed the Moon to be bone dry.
NASA have been working on a plan to return to the Moon by 2020, however the plan has not yet received the go ahead by the Obama Administration and is still being reviewed.
These two discoveries of water on the Moon and on Mars have greatly increased the chances of human expeditions to outer space. And the chances of human, rather than robot, ground explorations on these two great stepping stones to space.
