Good morning. I’m glad to be here to tell you about the topic.

Like any other city on the way of industrialization and modernization, HCM city has to solve many infrastructure problems  such as the water supply and drainage system, the newly-planned residential areas, the environmental pollution, so on. Among the difficulties that face the authorities and the inhabitants is the traffic. Personally, I think it’s a good idea to travel by public transport due to the following reasons.

First, according to the Department of Transportation, HCMC now has nearly 1.5 million motorbikes on a population of 5 million. With the present road system of the city, such a number of motorbikes is an unbalanced and unreasonable rate, causing not only air pollution but also traffic jams, especially in rush hours.

Secondly, according to the police, the number of road accidents, which is mainly caused by motorcyclists, has been on the increase during the last couple of years, claiming  thousands of lives, making the same number disabled and causing great loss of property. Therefore, if means of public transport such as buses, subways are put into service, the city traffic will be better and safer for the residents.

In the 2nd part of the topic, let me give my opinions on how to improve the quality of this service. As a young student, I don’t know much abuot it, but I’ll try my best.

First, in order to encourage people to give up their habit of going everywhere by their own bikes, the authorities should make means of public transport as convenient as motorbikes. For example, for short-term projects, comfortable mini buses should be put into service on main streets, linking the downtown areas with the office sections so that a large number of inhabitants could go to work by bus every day. And for long-term projects, the underground system of the city should be taken into consideration. In fact, according to the Thanh Nien newspaper issued , the People’s Committee of the city has approved of a plan to import 1,000 buses to replace 3,000 lambros which have become too old and uncomfortable.

Secondly, in order to have enough capital and competition to improve the service, the authorities can call for private investors in this business by offering them tax reduction or even tax exempt until they’ve got some profit. I mean that monopoly has to be eradicated so that the quality of the service could be improved thanks to the competition.

In conclusion, as I’ve mentioned above, it’s a good idea to travel by public transport to overcome the present problems about the city traffic  and to create jobs for thousands of people.
