The official land speed record (measured over one mile) is 1,227.985km/h (763.035mph; Mach 1.020), set by Andy Green (UK) on 15 October 1997 in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA, in Thrust SSC (SuperSonic Car).

Thrust SSC was the brainchild of former land speed record-holder Richard Noble (UK).

First Car to Break the Sound Barrier

When Andy Green set the land speed record in 1997 in the Black Rock Desert, it was the first time that anyone on land had gone faster than the speed of sound-usually around 1,236km/h (768mph) in dry air at 20°C (68°F). The resultant sonic boom shook a school and caused sprinkler covers to fall in the nearby town of Gerlach.

Pilot Green achieved the record 50 years and a day after the sound barrier was broken in the air by pilot Chuck Yeager (USA).

Fastest Rocket Car

The highest speed ever attained in a rocket-powered car is 1,016.086km/h (631.367mph) over the first measured kilometer by The Blue Flame, on the Bonnevilla Salt Flats, Utah, USA, driven by Gary Gabelich (USA) on 23 October 1970. Momentarily, Gabelich exceeded 1,046 km/h (650mph). The car was powered by a liquid natural gas/ hydrogen peroxide rocket engine.

Fastest Wheel-Driven Car

The fastest speed reached by a vehicle powered through its wheels-i.e., where the power of the car’s wheels, as opposed to jet power, which provides the thrust-is 737.794km/h (458.444mph) by the turbine-powered Vesco Turbinator, driven by Don Vesco (USA) at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA, on 18 October 2001.

Fastest Car Crash Survived

In September 1960, during trials to set a new land speed record at Bonneville, multiple world-record-holder Donald Campbell (UK) crashed his car Bluebird while travelling at a speed of 579km/h (360mph). The vehicle rolled over and Campbell fractured his skull; against all the odds, the daredevil driver survived.

Longest Skidmark

The skidmark made by the jet-powered Spirit of America, driven by Norman Craig Breedlove (USA), after the car went out of control at Bonneville in Utah, USA, on 15 October 1964, was nearly 10 km (6 miles long).

Shown here is a CGI of the 6,422=kg (14,148-lb), 12.8-m-long (50-ft) Bloodhound, the SuperSonic Car (SSC) that Richard Noble hopes will jet driver Andy Green to more than 1,609km/h (1,000mph)-faster than the current low-altitude air speed record. The target set for Bloodhound is a 31% improvement on the team’s previous record-breaking Thrust SSC time!

A very interesting and well researched post. I remember the Donald Campbell crash quite well and we visited a small museum and teashop which is dedicated to him a few years ago.
