More than 98% of toilet paper which is on the U.S. market is the primary source material virgin wood from forests and only a 2% is generated from recycled materials. Bad news does not stop there. Raw material processing involves the release of large quantities of toxic gases into the atmosphere as a result of chemicals used in the production process.
An American consumes three times more than a British toilet paper and 100 times more than a Chinese. In Europe, 40% of toilet paper available on the market is manufactured from recycled paper.
“This is a product that we use for a few seconds, but getting it are devastating consequences for the environment. Future generations will look to obtain the current mode of toilet paper as one of the greatest excesses of our age, “said researcher Allen Hershowitz of the National Council for the Protection of Natural Resources.
