The most common use of robots has been in manufacturing, where robotic equipment often replace human worker on production lines. The reasons for using robots rather than human labor are that robots:

• Can operate equipment to much higher precision than humans
• Can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without getting tired or losing accuracy
• May be cheaper to use over a long period
• Can work in environments which may be too dirty or dangerous for humans
• Mat be able to do work that is impossible for humans to perform

This equipment may be operated by humans or may be computer-controlled.

Dirty tasks

In manufacturing, many jobs in factories are messy or dirty. Dirty tasks may include jobs such as welding, grinding, molding and casting. When robots are used to perform the tasks in place of human workers, it means that people can be more involved in more pleasant and creative tasks.

Repetitive tasks

Robots are excellent workers; they are capable of working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without becoming tired. Robots do not have emotions and therefore don’t feel that they are worthless when performing menial tasks. For most people, repetitive task performed in industry would be considered very dull or boring. For example, a robot’s only task maybe to pick up an object from a conveyor belt and place it in a box. The robot can perform this task all day, every day, without getting bored!

Dangerous tasks

In manufacturing, it is common to see robots performing task which are very dangerous for people. This may include working with high temperature or using equipment which uses high pressure. In case like these, using robots in place of humans means that fewer people are exposed to dangerous situations, and therefore the risk of workplace accidents occurring is reduced.
