Tatoonie Planet with Two Suns Discovered by Kepler Spacecraft

Astronomers have discovered a new planet which orbits two suns. The Planet is named Kepler-16b as it is discovered through NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, but even astronomers are informally calling it Tatooine, after Luke Skywalker’s desert homeworld in Star Wars.

In ever growing world of astronomy are astronomers have discovered a new planet which orbits two suns. The Planet is named Kepler-16b as it is discovered through NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, but even astronomers are informally calling it Tatooine, after Luke Skywalker’s desert homeworld in Star Wars.

Kepler-16b is about 200 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. Scientists believe that it is a frozen world of rock and gas, its size almost equals th size of Saturn. Its surface temperatures vary between minus 150 Farenheit to minus 100 on a warm day.

Kepler-16b orbits two stars that are also circling each other both stars are small in comparison with our own sun, at about 69 and 20 per cent of the sun’s mass. One is about two-thirds the size of our sun, the other is about a fifth the size of our sun. The stars eclipse each other every three weeks or so.

The two suns orbit each other every 41 days at a distance of about 21 million miles. The planet completes a circular orbit around both stars every 229 days at a distance of 65 million miles.
