Sudden Shut-down of The Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant Worry Residents
The Three Mile Island Nuclear power station was constructed in 1974 and serves close to 800,000 homes, any delays in rectifying the problem could cause power shortage in many homes. we hope the matter gets resolved quickly.
Pandemonium struck authorities of Pennsylvania when the Harrisburg Nuclear Power Plant unexpectedly shut down last Thursday after a reactor malfunction. It was later to be discovered by technicians that the coolant pump had unexpectedly stopped working. As is the practice with all Nuclear power plants, workers are not allowed to approach the Nuclear facility until it has sufficiently cooled.
The reactor which is located at Three Mile Island let out a loud noise before it shut down sending panic among residents. This is the second time this mishap is being experienced at this nuclear reactor in a period of 33 years. The last similar incident happened here in 1979 when the Nuclear Reactor Unit 2 ceased. But in the last one month, this particular facility has had two shut downs, the last one having happened on 22 August 2012, bringing serious questions about this aging nuclear facility.
Automatic shut down by Nuclear reactors is a safety measure that happens whenever the computer detects anomalies in the system. The Spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Neil Sheehan, has assured concerned residents that the incident did not warrant any concerns or worry since it shut down without any complications. No detectable levels of radiation have been released by the shut down according authorities. It is however, common knowledge that there is no Nuclear reactor any where in the world that shuts down without releasing radiation. Residents are calling on the authorities to be as truthful as possible on the actual level of radiation released to avoid dangerous effects both in the short and long run.

Nice one Gaby. I too remember the earlier incident. I used to live near two of these nuclear power plants and was always concerned when the practice sirens would sound once a month (on Mondays). You never knew if they were real or not. Thank God they never were though. Take care.

Hope nothing goes wrong. I think it’s better to explore and shift to new energy source rather than simply rely on the nuclear power plant.
