Robots – The Journey So Far

Robots are viewed by many as helpmates which have taken over most of the work done by man.

Robot is gotten from the Czech word robota, which means “forced labour’’. It is viewed by some as counterparts others see it as a threat having superior intelligence which may likely replace human beings, yet others see it as a mere science fiction.

There are so many robots in use today globally. Consider a situation in which a worker works round the clock for weeks and even months without complaining of being tired. This is exactly what robots do in industries. They are sophisticated with software, gyroscopes, wireless data communication, global positioning systems. They also come with, force, ultra sound, chemical, heat. They are more competent today performing task which was viewed as not being possible to accomplish some years back. Let’s consider some typical examples.

As a companion, robots are used in nursing homes, here when they are being stroked they mimic some of the behaviours of animals like cooing, blinking its eyes and wiggling its fins. They also serve a therapeutic function.

Medically, robots assist in performing some of the most complicated surgeries with great accuracy. Consider a surgeon burying his head in a view finder of a giant console to peer at the image of his patient’s heart. The surgeon controls the robot’s arms as it snips and sews to repair a faulty heart valve. This system allows for minimally invasive surgery because of the robot’s extreme precision of movement, resulting in reduced trauma to the body, reduced blood loss, and quicker recovery.

Considering search and rescue, robots are being used in search for survivors during draughts. It is so sensitive that when it spots a survivor it sends signals.

In space, robots are being used to explore the surface of mars with scientific instruments and tools attached to its robotic arms.

Autonomous under water vehicles are being used by scientists to explore the ocean. These robots are unmanned and self powered. They are also used in telecommunication cables, search and recovery operations and also tracking of whales.

With this astonishing ability of robots some are beginning to reason that there may come a time in which robots will be produced that have superior intelligence to humans.
