RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT: THE SOLAR ENERGY PERSPECTIVE

Any development plan of a nation that is silent or less vocal about the well-being and comfort of the rural people cannot be considered adequate or good enough.

Renewable sources of energy include solar, hydro, wind, geothermal, marine (tidal, wave, etc) and biomass energy resources. They are renewable because they are present in the natural environment as dynamic flow current of energy, free and of course, not subject to political control.

Solar energy is the most promising of the renewable energy source. This is because of its apparent limitless potential. The technology is greatly advancing and is being embraced by most countries of the world for the electrification of the remote parts of their territories.

The capability of being installed at the very point of load or load centre has made solar-energy power plant recommendable for the electrification of the remote areas of any nation. In this connection, even the Nigerian situation has proven that the photovoltaic (PV) power generation system is the necessary option in the solar energy perspective. But it is not an encouraging observation that within the space of 40 years to date (since Nigeria became a Republic) the number of solar-pv installations across the country is far below expectation.

Federal, State and Local Governments are hereby being urged to exercise much more efforts in having them put in place. This can be achieved by means of workable policies and programs vigorously pursued through the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Solar Energy of Nigeria and other agencies and installations of that bias. In this regard, the well to do and well meaning individuals are not left out. Communities should organize and launch Solar-pv projects and the philanthropists providentially scattered all over the Local Government Areas should feel concerned enough to donate hearty towards the successful take off and completion of such projects, with minimal contribution from the government.
