Nuclear Power Plants are a Good Idea

This is a paper I wrote on why I believe that building a nuclear power plant is a good idea. I hope this article can persuade some people’s decision. Enjoy!

Nuclear power plants are a good idea

I think building a nuclear power plant is a great idea. Nuclear power plants are more efficient in producing energy than coal. While coal is burned, fission takes an atom, in most cases Uranium-235, and splits it. This causes a chain reaction that is controlled in a chamber. The energy released from this spins a turbine, which in turn creates electricity. Nuclear power is also a cleaner way to produce energy. When coal is burned it emits carbon. This is bad for the environment because it throws off carbon levels found on earth. When these natural levels are tampered with, the earth heats up at an alarming temperature. Not only are the chemicals emitted from coal harmful, also the way it is obtained. Every year 300 Americans are killed due to mining and transportation accidents. When fission occurs in a factory, no harmful gases are released into the atmosphere. The only harmful items left over after a nuclear reaction are the used fissionable materials. Although these items are considered dangerous, they are taken care of safely. This ‘nuclear trash’ is taken care of in many different ways. One way it is taken care of is deep ocean disposal. Containers made of borosilicate glass are filled up with nuclear waste. These containers are put into yet another water-tight metal container and dumped into the ocean. Another way of disposal is deep geological burial. Just like in deep ocean disposal, the radioactive waste is placed into containers which are then buried deep underground in non-populated areas. As you can see, safe nuclear technology is present in today’s world. While safe and clean coal technology has not been developed yet, nuclear power technology is very well developed and matured. All safety aspects have been accounted for making the overall nuclear technology better than coal technology. Not only is nuclear energy safer, it is also cheaper to maintain a nuclear power plant than maintaining a coal power plant. The life expectancy of a nuclear power plant is very long. This means that it is possible to get cheap energy for a very long time! It is obvious that a nuclear power plant would be a good idea.

I will have to agree as well, it is faulty equipment and man made errors that cause the problem with them. Nice article.

You are right. A nuclear power plant is very sensible.

The world should consider nuclear power as a viable source of energy because fossil fuel is becoming expensive and its deposit in the bottom of the earth is diminishing.

Good article, well done for taking the more controversial viewpoint. I can see the benefits of nuclear plants as long as safety procedures are adhered to at all times! I can’t say I am happy about great batches of nuclear waste sitting at the bottom of the ocean but then again I know very little about the waste produced by other energy sources. Many thanks.

My dad is actually a nuclear engineer at OSU. It’s really cool, and I agree, nuclear power would be wonderful, as long as it is guaranteed to be safe.

Ive heard nuclear power plants as dangerous but reading your points. I could agree. an interesting write, thanks.

I used to live close to the nuclear plant at Jacksonville,FL. I was always scare of that thing. Very nice! :D

There are plenty of green energy’s, before you should even start to think nuclear… they are unsafe, and already the ones that have caused pollution they’re dirt will be with us for thousands of years, you cant just shovel it up… also they are very expensive to run, and dismantle after there use, and the waste where will you put all that, for the next 10 millennia you should think deeper friend cheers

Nuclear power should be in the mix of energy sources we use.
