Nanotechnology Dressing Will Fight Infection Before You Even Know There is an Infection
Published by Scientists at the University of Bath and the burns team at the Southwest UK Pediatric Burns Center in Bristol are working with international teams to create an advanced wound dressing that will detect and treat infections from the moment they arise. The prototype will take around four years, but the wait will be well worth it.
The scientists are using nanotechnology to accomplish this. The dressing will release antibiotics when nanocapsules in the dressing are triggered by the presence of unfriendly bacteria. When the dressing releases the antibiotic, the dressing will change color…thus, alerting healthcare workers that there is an infection. This is mind boggling, as the dressing will be able to target and begin treatment before the infection actually overtakes the wound, and it will mean that patients do not have to wait for cultures to tell the healthcare team that an infection is present. The treatment process will be sped up greatly.
The technology will be an invaluable asset to children with burns, where infections commonly led to infections, or worse, toxic shock syndrome. Everything from nursing home patients with pressure ulcers to soldiers on the battlefield to children with Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) will benefit from the early detection and treatment that this bandage will afford.
All I can say is…thank God for the wonderful researchers, scientists, and doctors that devote their lives in effort of making medical strides to ease the health of others.
