There are many satellites stationed in space.  The satellites that orbit earth have a large affect on  much of the worlds technology.  Satellites work on several different frequencies.  The reason for this is to keep information from crossing paths and getting mixed up.  The satellites have several antennas that send information and several antennas that receive information.  Satellites have numerous uses including communication, weather, and observation.

One of the main uses is communication.  A communication satellite is sometimes referred to as a comsat.  Communication satellites use several different orbits.  Some of the orbits used are molniya orbits, geostationary orbits, and elliptical orbits.

There are many uses for communication satellites.  One of the most popular uses for comsats is radio and TV broadcasting.  This technology allows breaking news to be broadcasted world wide with in minutes.  These satellites are also used for airplane, ship, submarine and vehicle communication.

There are also weather satellites.  These satellites are used to monitor the earths climate and weather.  Weather satellites play a big roll in monitoring tornadoes, tropical storms, volcanic eruptions, and ocean currents.  It has also been reported that many of the wild fires in the western parts of the united states were also visible on weather satellites.

There are some satellites used for observing outer space.  These satellites are called astronomical satellites.NASA has found some very valuable information using astronomical satellites.  They use this technology to observe other planets that they are not able to observe from earth due to light and atmosphere interference.
