How to Find the Density of a Small Marble

Their is a few different ways you could find the density of a small marble. Although their might be a few ways, in my opinion, the easiest way to do it is by using water displacement and a scale. This procedure consist of three steps, measure the volume with graduated cylinder, measure the mass with a triple beam balance, and then calculate the density. It might sound simple but has more complications then just that.

The first step of finding the density of a small marble would be to find the volume of the the marble. To that you need to fill a graduated cylinder to a certain amount (like 50 mL). With the graduated cylinder you put the small marble in the already measure water and your water will increase. You then take the increase amount of water in the graduated cylinder and subtract the starting measurement from it and then you have your volume. Make sure to make your measurements are as best as possible to get the right density. So for the first step of finding the density of a small marble, you have to find the volume.

Next, you need to find the mass of the small marble. For this step you need an accurate balance. Make sure the balance is zeroed out for measuring. With the zeroed out balance, measure the mass of your marble. Make sure to make your measurements are as best as possible to get the right density. Therefore you can use the mass for calculating the density.

Lastly, finding the density with these measurements isn’t too hard. Density can be calculated in a simple way. All that is needed to do when finding the density of something is take the mass of the object and divide it by its volume. Therefore, in this situation of finding the mass of the small marble, you’d take the marble’s mass, which was measured with the beam balance, and divide it by the volume, which was measured with a graduated cylinder by water displacement. Your unit would be the mass unit over volume unit. Then you finally have your density.

So to find the density of a small marble, you need to do three simple steps. One is to find the volume with a graduated cylinder by water displacement. Next, find the mass with a balance. Lastly, find the density by calculating it by mass divided by volume. That is how one would find the density of a small marble.
