Far-Out New Ideas for Nasa
Spherical Mars robots, space buildings made using radio waves and motion powered space suits “could be NASA missions in the future”.
NASA’s Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) founded in 1998 to harvest new and futuristic ideas for space flight and aeronautics .
Lately they have come across some ideas that they beleive NASA should study further into:
- Spherical Mars robots
- Space buildings made using radio waves
- Motion powered space suits
In 2007 the NIAC were shut down due to budget contraints and internal politics. Now a US National Research Council committee has called for the organisations return.
3 of the comittee’s funded projects are now on path to one day being a NASA mission, these are:
- Plasma Rocket
- X-ray Interferometer
- ‘Star Shade’ (this could help with searching for extrasolar planets using existing telescopes)
