Time Travel
The current state of time travel technology.
As seen in: You really need an example?
Is it possible?
Well, Let’s see what Michio Kaku has to say:
The only problem with this is that at the level of physics Kaku is talking about, we have very little actual evidence to support these theories. In science, experimentation accounts for pretty much everything, and without it, you have very little. But saying that, these theories are (apparently) not just pulled together on a whim on the CERN staff’s nightly pub crawl. So let’s take a look at some of these theories in greater detail, and try to figure out if one day, I might fulfill my dream of meeting myself and finally engaging in intelligent conversation.
How could it be done?
There are many, many theories concerning time travel, and for the most part, they are all truly epic in scale, we’re talking the kind of things that not even Larry Niven (A great science fiction author), could have dreamed up. Here are some examples (Some of which are explored in the above video):
- Travel around the edge of the universe against its rotation
- Build a massive spinning pole, using half the matter in the universe and travel in circles around it
- Travel really, really, really fast
- Wormholes
- Traveling around a black hole at high speed
- A tube of lasers warping space time
Out of all of these, only one has actually been observed in reality: traveling very fast. To explain how moving at a great speed can cause you to travel in time, let’s have a look at this video:
This was actually recorded during the Apollo missions. One of the rockets was given an extremely accurate clock, which was synchronized with another clock at NASA ground control. When the rocket got back, it was found that the clock had actually lagged behind by a minuet, but measurable amount of time. The drawback here of course is that you can only travel one way in time- to the future.
So what if we want to go back? Well, unfortunately it looks more and more like Bill and Ted’s phone booth is not going happen. Notice how in the above list, time travel always revolves (sometimes literally) around an object. The drawback of this is that you can’t travel back in time before the object itself was created. Plus most of these objects are so fantastically huge, or require so much energy, that they’re all but impossible at the moment.
So will we have time travel any time soon?
Well, there is one project that is currently being developed by Professor Ronald Mallett. The system uses a large number of high energy lasers arranged in a tunnel to “twist” space and time around itself. Light, as the main lynchpin of physics and specifically time travel, is the most suited to warping space and time.
So what can this device do? Will you be able to go back in time? Sadly, at the moment no. The professor predicts that even if this system does work (and he has every faith it will), it will only be able to send particles back in time. But consider this:
.– . / -.-. — ..- .-.. -.. / … . -. -.. / — . … … .- –. . … / ..- … .. -. –. / — — .-. … . / -.-. — -.. . / — .-. / . …- . -. / .— ..- … – / -… .. -. .- .-. -.– .-.-.- / – …. .. … / … -.– … – . — / .– — ..- .-.. -.. / .-.. . – / ..- … / -.-. — — – ..- -. .. -.-. .- – . / .– .. – …. / – …. . / .–. .- … – .-.-.-
If you can’t figure this out, here’s a Hint.
So yes, time travel may well be possible in the next few years, but at the moment I’d say it’s going to be very limited, and we won’t be able to visit the past any time soon. But still, wouldn’t a message from the future be cool? I’d imagine it would be something like this. Oh come on. You know it would be.

Interesting article. If I knew time travel was possible I wouldn’t even begin to know where to go first.

I think I’d go back to before I went to university and tell myself to stop spending money, quit the job I was working at the time, try to find a new one, and pick my housemates more carefully. And start writing sooner too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this article as well as the film footages. I’m fascinated with time travel myself. My work was published on the Triond website, published under my pen name Joanna Maharis which is also my pen name Joanna Maharis.
Sincerely,
