Health Benefits of Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are considered to a healthy food because of their health benefits.

Sunflower is a native in the America. These plants needed a full sun shine in order for them to grow full bloom. They named this plant sunflower because it depicts an image to the sun with its fiery petals. There are many varieties of Sunflowers as well. Sun flowers can grow up to 3.5 meters.

Sunflower seeds are considered to a healthy food because of their health benefits. They have many nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins. It is also high in energy, and helps lower bad cholesterol in the blood. Sunflower seeds like other nuts are good source of proteins. They are also a natural source of anti-oxidants because of sunflower contains, acids such as chlorgenic, quinic, and caffeic. These antioxidants helps remove harmful oxidant molecules from the body and it also reduce blood sugar levels.

Sunflower is a good source of vitamin E to protect the skin from harmful oxygen free radicals. It is also a good source of vitamin B complex such us niacin which helps reduce bad cholesterol, folic acid for DNA synthesis,B1, B6, pyridoxine, and riboflavin. It is also rich in calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, magnesium, selenium and copper.

Sunflower seeds not only used to make oil, they are also used as foods. It can be turned into a snack, can be added to salad as sprinkles or decorations, can be used in desserts such as chocolate coated seeds and other baked goods. And it is also used as a butter which is good for those who are allergic to peanut.

Other usage of the sunflower is used as a bird food. Sunflower is also the national flower of the country of Ukraine and a state flower for Kansan, one of the state in the USA.

The University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City has experimented planting sunflowers along the Osmena road, they are currently in bloom until the end of May.
