Getting Started in Electronics
This is going to help the wanna-be tinkerer, ‘gadgetrer’, or inventor find out how to get there.

By reading this article, you must have an intrest in electronics or at least know where to start. Well then, I am going to help you. A couple of years ago, I had no clue how to read a schematic, solder, tell a resistor from a capacitor, or wire up a logic gate, but I fell upon a few sources the helped me get along.
First, I am going to discuss the best books for the job. These are the few (But extremely helpful) books that gave me basic understanding of the subject, what I needed and where to go after I aquired the knowledge. I am going to mention my favorite book first; Electronics for Dummies by Gordon McComb and Earl Boysen. This is in my opinion the very best absoloute beginers book. It tells you what components are and what they to and how they are used, it gives a list of all of the materials and tools needed throughout the book, gives lessons and then takes you through a few projects. Upon completion of that book, and you feel like you need to move on to heavier more complex and advanced concepts you should purchase or check out Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics by Stan Gibilisco. This book is written in a textbook fashion with tests along the way. First you will work through the physics of electricity, then move on to the basics, and then it gets interesting. You begin to learn many new ideas and concepts that will easily give you new ideas about some cool new gadget. And I warn you, dont be supprised when you see the book and say “no way!” because it just happens to 700 pages long. I just hope that that alone doesnt turn you off, because it is truly a facinating book.
Next, I will discuss other methods of obtaining information, most being the internet. As you probobl know, the internet is a great tool. I mean, how could it not be, it practicaly contains the knowledge of the entire world. Now, I cant possibly list every website that was helpful to me while starting my hobby/career in electroniics and robotics (which is a branch of the electronics tree), but I can tell you that you can easily search any question and most likely find an answer. I would suggest simply searching “Electronics” or “How to start a hobby in electronics” on google. From there you can use your imagination. My next favorite method of obtaining info is by asking someone who has the knowledge, and mabe even getting a few lessons. Many electronics enthusiast sites often give email adresses of experienced technicians and such and they will answer any question you throw at them. I mean ANY QUESTION (regarding electronics that is). These guys do it for a living and are seriously amazing.
