Beginning of Human Colonization of Mars : Project Regobricks & Power Cell

An agreement of two years has been signed between Nasa and synthetic biologists at Brown and Stanford Universities for human colonization of Mars. Nasa will do this with the help of two projects from the synthetic biologists.

An agreement of two years has been signed between Nasa and synthetic biologists at Brown and Stanford Universities for human colonization of Mars. Nasa will do this with the help of two projects from the synthetic biologists.

In their first project REGObricks they manipulate bacteria namely,  Sporosarcina pasteurii bacterium to split urea into ammonium which in turn will make calcium carbonate crystals  . Those crystals will actually work like a glue for the Martian sand to form building material.

Normal  Sporosarcina pasteurii  is not able to do this . That’s why the biologists inserted this  into E coil bacteria.  In this way they developed specially engineered gene sequences, known as biobricks, into microbes.

The name of the second project is Power Cell. In this project  sugar will be made from sunlight by using bacteria.  The bacterium will be used in this is Anabaena. Anabaena resides in carbon dioxide and nitrogen. It changes these gases into chemical energy that is to say sugars. This sugar will trigger other living beings.

So scientists just don’t have to jam-pack their bags to start a colony at Mars. A small bag of microbes can accomplish the task easily!

So when are you leaving Earth? :D

Nice info. Hope this project kicks off soon, because a dutch company is also planning for human colonisation on Mars.

Literally too far-out to me. But interesting just the same. Can’t believe we’ve gotten to this but hey, technology, scientists and experimentation can’t be stopped! Thanks for sharing this, I had no idea. :)
