Robotics

Robotics is a very young type of science that has actually started in the past fifty to sixty years.

It is very complex and in order to make robots make sophisticated social behaviors like cooperation, compromise , negotiation and others, long and complex mathematical frameworks must be created. Many people that have had an experience with robots see that they are very fun to use and to interact with but in reality a simple type of movement like walking, movement of limbs or even running are actually hard to do because  creating these type of movements and condensing them to most simple mathematical frameworks and equations are very complicated to do.

First, a social welfare function is a rule in which the individual makes decisions on whether to move in the way of the interests of the individual. This has been done by quite a number of different scientists. Now, the real challenge and what many of other scientists are trying to accomplish is to have an individual robot care and react to interest of other robots. The problem here is that optimization is very hard to make happen. Optimization is the concept that a group must act a single unit to make rational judgments.

Instead of doing this, scientists have taken it a step down and settled for two concepts called Satisficing and Conditioning. Satisficing is concept that lets an individual robot know if a decision is “good enough”. This concept makes creating patterns of movement between certain individuals together know when to take a good decision. It may not be the best decision but one that would not be risk the life or well-being of each other. Conditioning is the mathematical equation that shows the movement and rules in order for the robots to make decisions that are “good enough” for the unit.

The social choice theory focuses on the application of individual preferences to form a welfare function that can be used to define what is best for the group. This only makes the whole process of having a group work together even more complex because having the group itself decide their own decisions and communicate to do something a certain way is hard to get the robots to think that way.

In conclusion, like I have mentioned before, there are many steps that have to be done and thought about before even doing the simplest thing like even making a robot walk or even interact with another robot. Robotics is a scientific field that is very interesting and complex to understand. It is still at a very early stage but it is sure to take flight because technology is starting to speed up and humans are very interested in robots helping humanity in different ways.
