Intelligent Systems

Intelligent systems are the precursor to AI.

A new concept that is started to gain moment in the research and development departments of many software companies is Intelligent System (IS) design. IS is currently being used to further the theories being applied to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to aid in its development.
To better understand how AI can even become a concept we must first educate ourselves on what exactly is an intelligent system. An intelligent system is by definition, simply a system that has the ability learn through a series of processes to achieve its goal. The system does this by sensing the environment that it is been deployed in. Then from each situation it experiences, stores that information and which actions or functions were used to achieve that goal. It is continually working through processes and reaches the objective using fewer processes than before. It completes these goals in shorter time more often that random chance allows.

The definition for IS implies that yes, indeed a system does exist. Furthermore it implies that an environment for IS must exist in order for it to work. It must be able to send and receive communications from its environment. By communication we mean that an exchange of information has occurred and that the IS was able recognize the function of the information received and then the system was able to act upon that information. However, the IS must be able to check and see if its last action was a favorable one or not. The ability for the IS to gauge whether or not that the last action was favorable is based on whether or not it was getting any closer to its goal. The primary goal is broken down into sub-goals. The IS must achieve many sub-goals in order for it to achieve the primary goal. Since the response is sometimes favorable and sometimes not it must decide which of the previous actions prevented the newest response from being favored. In other words it must learn. The IS must also be able to catalog the situations, responses and finally the results.

When you sit down and think about it, the human brain is itself an intelligent system. As we grow up and go through school and our lives; we develop the ability to know what works and what doesn’t work for us. When we start out as infants we have absolutely no idea how to do even the must rudimentary tasks, such as talking or even to focus on an object. Computers are quickly gaining the ability to think for themselves just as we humans do. Eventually the further development of computer IS will lead to development of true AI and the world will never be the same.
