How Hydroelectricity Generated

The usage of non-renewable sources of energy has raised concerns regarding both exhaustion and pollution. Therefore, there came a new idea, which almost produces no emissions and a long-term solution to the power demand. Electricity generated from energy of water called Hydroelectricity.

Therefore, there came a new idea, which almost produces no emissions and a long-term solution to the power demand. Electricity generated from energy of water called Hydroelectricity. Now, a large amount of electric power is generating from the energy possessed by flowing water. The main part of a hydroelectric power station is a dam, which serves as a barrier for the flow of water. Hence, a huge reservoir of water is making on one side. The idea of dams has been there since long ago where people used them to store water. Construction of dams requires huge capital investment and great engineering skills.
The water, which is stored at a height possess a large amount of potential energy. This energy can be converting into kinetic energy by making this water flow down through a sloping path. Shutters are providing on the dam, whose opening can controlled accordingly. To get a large amount of force of water, large tubes called penstock can also used. Hence, the kinetic energy of water is transfer to the turbine where it is converting to Mechanical Energy. Electromagnetic Induction takes place inside the generator and an induced current is produce as the speed of rotation reaches a particular value. If this rotational speed can held constant, constant electric output can obtained. The electric energy thus produced, is distribute through a grid system.
Therefore, this was about the technical side of a hydroelectric power plant. Besides providing with electric power, hydroelectric power stations also provide a number of other uses. That is why it is also known as multipurpose projects. The water used to generate electricity is also use for irrigation through canals. Sometimes a wildlife sanctuary or a park also accompanies the power plant. Hydroelectricity, a renewable source of energy having almost zero pollution, as it burns no fuels is the greatest advantage it has. Going to the disadvantage side, it can cause environmental damage to the surrounding aquatic life. Also in case of any dam failures, it may also lead to loss of life and property. Since the power requirements are meet and the zero emission level in hydroelectric power stations, it is indeed an acceptable way to generate electricity.
