Biogas: Is It a Future?

Is it really good enough to solve our future problems?

Global warming in general is heating up of earth. It occurs due to the presence of gases like carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, ozone, etc. but the most important gas responsible for global warming is carbon dioxide. It absorbs infra red light radiated from earth surface and hence prevent their escape from earth. These are the rays which have the heating effect and cause the heating up of earth surface.

Scientists says that we just have got a decade or so to cut down the rate of increase in global warming because the rate at which the increase in global warming is taking place, the earth can reach to such high temperatures that it may become impossible to cool down earth back.

Some of dreadful things which can occur due to global warming are the draught, increase in sea levels which can cause submergence of coastal areas of the world, melting of ice and glaciers, extreme climate changes etc.

Now, to curb the increase in global warming many steps have been taken like increasing fuel efficiency of machines, use of non-conventional fuels like wind energy, biogas, solar energy etc. and increasing public awareness.

Biogas consist of mixture of gases mainly methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. It is produced during anaerobic digestion of organic matter. The most important gas which is actually used is methane. The microorganisms responsible for methane production are methanogenic bacteria. Now to prevent further increase in carbon dioxide level of atmosphere, the use of biogas advised. This is because burning of methane produce carbon dioxide which is not new. The carbon dioxide produced was previously present in atmosphere. It was taken up by plants during photosynthesis and this carbon dioxide is only returned back to atmosphere, during biogas production and utilization. So, no new carbon dioxide is added to atmosphere. Hence, it prevents the further increase the carbon dioxide level in atmosphere.

I feel that this way we can stop the increase in global warming but we can’t reduce the level of already present carbon dioxide level in atmosphere. So, the earth is still not back to normal. It just prevents earth from getting imbalanced further. But it is not a perfect solution.

Bio-gas is a seriously bad idea; bio-fuels and the like a produced by burning crops, which will force up the price of food and increase deforestation. The idea was first practised by the Nazis, which should be enough to put anyone off. Unfortunately, any substitute for petrol will be highly lucrative and we’re now subject to a propaganda campaign to make us all think its the solution.

I shall share what’s happening in India :

The Gas (LPG) rates are sky rocketting. Bio gas is produced at lesser than half the cost. Some techniques have been developed to produce the biogas in urban homes , where you can add your daily kitchen waste slowly & get the cooking fuels. Hence , here , where is the question of burning crops ?

In addition , we get a very good compost for our plants.

my point of view biogas is best option.biogas is cost effective method comparing to other method.in industrial waste also used for biogas production. for example pressmud waste from sugar factory.it is high cellulosic content.so 1 kg of Pressmud produced 0.5 cubic meter of biogas.this biogas used for cooking purpose in canteen.so waste is recycled as well as biogas produced for cooking…..

in addition we get very good vermi compost for organic farming…

Biogas is really useful, cheap, clean.. and the list goes on BUT BUT BUT one should have a huge biogas unit at his or her doorstep to really use it as it cant be compressed and filled into cylinders easily…

i used biogas from my quail manure… it’s good cooking and i used it as a light using an old aladine. 2 pale of manure everyday is enough to sustaine my daily stove fuel needs…
