What is an alkaline battery?
We use batteries all the time. We use them in our watches, toys, torches, and walkman in fact, in almost every modern gadget. What is a battery/ a battery is a device that produces electricity by chemical action. A battery contains one or more units called cells. Each cell produces current. There are various types of dry cell batteries, but we shall deal with alkaline batteries only because that is the most commonly used battery.
A dry battery
An alkaline dry cell battery is more powerful than other types of batteries. It lasts five to eight times longer than a carbon-zinc battery. It has a nail-like collector inserted from the bottom of the container. The granules of zinc form the anode.
The manganese dioxide cathode is made by electrolysis. The electrolyte is solution of potassium hydroxide and is in direct contact with the anode, ensuring that when the anode is exhausted the life of the battery too gets exhausted.
Alkaline dry cells are used mainly in portable radios, cameras, etc.
