A Replacement for Garbage Bags? From Corn?
Could ethanol based products one day replace the popular petroleum based products? From crude oil to corn?
Could ethanol based plastic bags be used as a replacement to the popular petroleum etroleumbased plastic garbage bags? Petroleum based garbage bags are not bio-degradable, and cannot be recycled, as compared to their competitor, ethanol based plastic. Another alternative worth mentioning is composting. Composting food scraps and other materials that could decompose naturally would cut down on the space needed for landfills.
MATERIAL LIST
· CONTROL-Standard Plastic Garbage Bag
· 1 ethanol based plastic bag
· 1 piece of cloth
· 1 piece of aluminum foil
· Sufficient amount of dirt to fill containers
· 3 containersjars
PROCEDURE
1. Fill each container half full of dirt.
2. Place a piece of cloth in one of the containers.
3. Place the ethanol based plastic bag in one of the containers.
4. Place the piece of aluminum foil in one fo the containers.
5. In each container, fill the remaining space full of dirt.
6. Seal each container.
7. Observe and record results each week for a determined amount of time.
Unfortunately, the results to the experiment were inconclusive. After one week of being fully submerged in soil, within a sealed container, the materials showed no sign of decomposition. The time with which the experiment requires is unreasonable and out of the range of the resources available at the time of the experiment.
Below is a chart of the dates and times that observations were made during this experiment.
