Mirrors of Sound: Messages in The Sky
Until today, the main problem in putting the system to practical use has been that meteor trails last only a few seconds. But the researchers believe they have found a solution. Once the voice has been converted into digital signals, the scientists have developed a way to compress them so that they can be transmitted in a few hundredths of a second. Since some half-dozen meteor trails are formed every second, they may well provide mirrors in the sky from which radio signals can be bounced to distant receivers over the earth’s horizon.
