Interestingly enough there are many people who feel the best thing for the planet is the extinction of humans. How likely is this to happen?

By 2030, 20 percent of all living species will become extinct, and if current rates of haunting and pollution continue, half of all species on earth will be extinct within a 100 years. Here’s a few species have become extinct since 2000.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system is suffocating under a shroud of mud mixed with toxic pesticides that have washed off farmlands. Many of its 2900 individual coral reefs and 900 islands are unlikely to survive the next five to ten years. Many insure reefs are now highly degraded or dead having collapsed due to the effect of sediment and nutrients pouring out of the rivers.

The Mediterranean Monk Seal is believed to be in danger of extinction: less than 500 individuals are reported. In the past, it was found all over the Mediterranean Sea and in a broad geographical area, nowadays, it has been seen only in a few parts of the Mediterranean Sea. Several causes have provoked a dramatic population decrease: coastal urbanization and pollution, deliberate killing by fishermen, stochastic events and low survival rate. Several organizations have done efforts for its preservation in several countries.
