Mount Merbabu is a dormant stratovolcano in Central Java province on the Indonesian island of Java. The name Merbabu could be loosely translated as “Mountain of Ash” from the Javanese combined words; Meru means "mountain" and awu or abumeans "ash".
Indonesia’s Mount Merapi is the nation’s second most active volcano and has great spiritual significance for those living on its fertile slopes.
This is one of the findings of the research cooperation between Indonesia Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Ministry of Research and Technology, Japan Science and Technology (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) presented on Tuesday (5/1/2012) at COREMAP office LIPI, Jakarta.
