Acid Rain
Acid Rain means the presence of excessive acid in rain water.
According to the Brønsted-Lowry Theory, an acid is defined as a hydrogen ion (proton) donator in a reaction. Acids exist naturally in the environment. However, human activities have increased the amount of acids in the environment while also spreading it to areas where they don’t normally exist. This is seen by how acids have impacted on the environment, in particular, rain, soil and ground water, acidifying all these parts of the environment.
A great variety of matter exists in the world, and it is necessary to have a method for classifying it. If we know something about the various properties of elements and compounds, we can classify them according to those properties and can more easily see the relationships. There are numerous compounds, but no two are exactly alike in all their properties. However, groups of compounds may have similar properties. Acids, for example, have similar properties. They have many uses and play an important part in our day-to-day living. In this section, you will study the properties of acids and some of the common acids and their uses.
