What Actually Happened Before The Big Bang?

A comedian’s view of the origins of the universe. Scientists will tell you Big Bang theory, like evolution is to all intents and purposes proved. But while evolution, though it does not explain everything, stands up to critical examination Big Bang theory depends of the existence of hypothetical sub atomic particles and the use of imaginary numbers like "i" (the square root of -1). In fact it has more holes than a seive – and we’re not talking about black holes.

The Big Question

Arguments rage around the web about what existed before the cosmic even known as Big Bang which scientists claim was the beginning of everything. Scientists dissmiss philosophers by saying anyone who is not a trained scientist cannot truly understand science; philosophers reply that as science is evidence based and relies on demonstrable proof, Big Bang theory has no more scientific basis than the various creation myths of the world’s religions. Religionists believe what they believe n this author would never question their right to do so because philosophy can only offer theories and conjectures but is honest enough to admit as much. Scientists on the other hand claim they have “proved” their theories with mathematical models of the universe built on data largely made up by the scientists most desperate to prove their thories

The two sides may argue forever about the origins of the Universe because until we can travel backwards in time to observe what happened we can only speculate. The problem then does not belong in the realm of science but is a philosophical question closely linked with our understanding of the nature of time and the greatest mystery of  the universe that we inhabit, the human mind.

The problem science has with accepting the possibility of a pre – big bang Universe is that according to the equations of the theoretical physicists, the Universe could not have existed before such an event. As far as science is concerned it is the beginning of time, space and all things within those dimensions. Thus we find big-bang science getting close to a religious creation myth in that it proposes an absolute starting point.

This is where a poet, one time (briefly) stand up comedian and fiction writer has an advantage over science. Such a mind can wander into the regions beyond time and space and consider ideas which are “unscientific”.

The most popular of the beginning of time theories proposes that before the big bang, which was actually more of a shwoooom than a BANG!!! because to get a bang you have to contain an explosion, the whole Universe was compressed into a pellet of matter the size of a mouse turd. More serious science writers eschew the mouse turd analogy, they are more likely to say a lump of matter ranging in size from a grain of sand or salt to a small planet. The idea of the entire universe, consisting of an estimated hundred billion galaxies each with up to a hundred billion solar systems according to Encyclopaedia Brtannica, being squeezed into so small an object is just silly. A mouse turd is much more realistic, not that reality has a lot to do with any of the theories of cosmologists.
