How Things Break

An article explaining the particle science behind how things break.

As you may or may not know, everything is made of particles. Particles are microscopic pieces of matter. Millions of particles are in tiny spaces of solids, liquids and gasses. I wont explain about the particles in each state now, but I will publish an article about that in the near future.

Anyway, back to the point; when you drop something of hit something, you are applying pressure. To keep the material intact, the bind between the particles has to be stronger than the force being applied. The reason why crockery is easy to break is because the bind between the particles is not very strong. So metal doesn’t break as easily because the bind between the particles are stronger.

So when something breaks, the particles are being separated from each other, because they can’t keep their bind together.

Also, if two objects are hit into each other, then the stronger material with a stronger bind will not get damaged.
