Different Kinds of Mirrors

Have you ever wondered what kind of mirror you are looking at?

We usually use mirrors to look at our appearance and face. A mirror is a piece of glass with one side painted with a thin layer of shiny metal like aluminum or silver. The metal gives a shiny surface that helps reflect most of the light rays that strike into the mirror.

Plane Mirror

This is the most commonly used mirror with a flat surface and is especially designed to give a clear and sharp reflection or image. The image you would see in this kind of mirror is called virtual image for the image you would see looks exactly like you except it seems to be turned around.

Concave Mirror

This is a kind of mirror that was designed in a different way, curved inward like the bowl of spoon. When you look at this kind of mirror, your image would look larger and you could see yourself more clearly. People use this kind of mirror when shaving or applying cosmetics on their faces. The driver’s side mirror is concave also. It was designed that way so as not to distract him with the reflection of the headlights from the incoming vehicles coming from the back or sides.

Convex Mirror

This is a mirror that is curved outward like the back of a spoon. The image that you would see is smaller than the actual size of the object. The rear view mirrors on cars are perfect example of this mirror. It helps the driver because it shows a lot of scene behind. In supermarkets they help clerks to see activities in the store and for security purpose as well.

Two-Way Mirror

A two-way mirror is also called a one-way mirror. It is a kind of mirror which is partially reflective and partially transparent. It is used in a darkened room on one side and a well-lit room on the other, allowing those in the darkened room to see into the lighted room but not vice versa. It is usually found in police precincts where the witness can identify the suspect in a line-up.
