Cryptids – Nandi Bear

The 3rd part in a new series of articles discussing creatures that may or may not exist, the so called cryptids. WARNING: What you are about to read may sound disturbing.

It is time to talk about another cryptozoological creature. This time we will travel into the dark continent in the search of a creature who only very few westerners claim to have seen, the ferocious Nandi Bear!

The Nandi Bear, also known as Ngoloko or Kerit, is an African predatory cryptid. Even though it is called the Nandi Bearmany believe that the description of this creature sounds much like some sort of hyena. They are usually described as aggressive and powerfully build creatures estimated to be over four feet tall at the front shoulders and having a sloping back, thus giving it a hyena-like appearance. The Nandi Bear has got its name from the Nandi people of Kenya, and these people insist that the animal is a real flesh and blood creature. They say they are getting rarer, but the elders can tell you about their hunting behaviour, they insist that this monstrous creature only kills to eat the brains of their victims. This claim seems a bit irrational, but never the less sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Some westerners have worked to prove the existence of this creature, but what could it be if it does exist? Some say it is simply a baboon and besides the possibility that it may be some sort of unknown hyena some believe that it is, like the name suggests some sort of bear. The problem with this theory is that there are no wild bear species in Africa, but interestingly enough this hasn’t always been the case. Africa did have its own bear species at one time called the Atlas Bear. The Romans often hunted these beasts for sport or to execute criminals, which made them quite a rare animal even back then. The last atlas bear is believed to have been shot in the 1870’s in the northern mountains of Morocco, some therefore speculate that the Nandi Bears might be a group of atlas bears that has survived extinction and has stayed hidden in East Africa.

There is a very small possibility that the Nandi Bear is still alive or went extinct relatively recent. But we can’t know for sure until a specimen is caught or bones are found.
