Social Media, Hoaxes, Risks, and Helpfulness

How social media can create the ultimate media frenzy and also help you at the same time.

A few days ago I saw a post on a very much used social media network saying that a famous movie personality was dead. Unaware of what was going on, I went straight to another very much used search engine and looked. HA! HOAX! Why people start these rumors is beyond me. They are so meaningless and unless you have some solid connection to the “rumored”, just don’t start one…a Rumor! People are so twisted with their words that eventually they turn into stories and thus a rumor is born.

Social media networks are great for that. I don’t know if they are harmful or helpful at this point. You have your stalkers, friend collectors, and random freaks. I have been subjected to two of the three of those. Not fun at all! They make blocks and ways to hide information and such, but people still manage to get past that and bother you. It is a risk you take either way, one you should be fully aware of.

I was never a fan. I really never wanted to be a part of the world as a whole. I just wanted to hide and not be seen and just let the world pass me by. I had been hurt to many times in reality to actually mess with anything on a cyber level. I just was not interested…until one day…

Someone very close to me wanted to try to find there very best friend that they had lost touch with. It was my bright idea to start the ball rolling. I was able to set their account up and through that I found their friend. It was right on time too because not too long after that, their friend died. It was a good thing this time with the social media situation. So I decided, why not. I joined a few months before my birthday and wow, it was great. I had no idea that it could be so nice. And once again it was right on time, I had a life crisis occur. I had so many friends help me through it and it was wonderful to know that these people really cared.

Social media can be both a blessing and a curse. I am grateful for it, but I just hope that people are more careful with it. We are given the freedom to express ourselves and with the invention of social media, we should have more respect for that freedom.
