In-vitro fertilization
How in-vitro fertilization is an attack on human life.
It is better for infertile couples to adopt children, rather than resort to in-vitro fertilization because of its immorality. In-vitro fertilization is a direct attack on human life because it brings the worth of a human being down to the level of a toy. There is a document on respect for human life, which courageously defends human life and procreation with God as it was intended, by condemning in-vitro fertilization. A more pro-life, and a pro-choice, approach for infertile couples, who wish to have children, would be to adopt rather than to try and create their own.
In-vitro fertilization attacks humanity by bringing the worth of a human being down to the level of a doll. Life is seen as a customized shopping trip, where one can select all the desired physical qualities, through in-vitro fertilization. By choosing the characteristics that couples would like their child to have, the couple has only degraded the dignity of life, and their child, by treating it like a customized American Girl doll. In- vitro fertilization also uses many embryos for the process, though only one will be successfully impregnated in the woman. The rest of the several used embryos are either destroyed or frozen for future use. Destroying embryos kills life; storing leftover embryos in a freezer is like putting away leftover food. In-vitro fertilization is an immoral practice because it does not give embryos the dignity they deserve as humans.
The quoted document on respect for human life courageously defends human life and procreation with God, by condemning in-vitro fertilization because it takes away the rightful dignity of humans. According to this document, IVF attacks human life because the “techniques of fertilization in vitro can open the way to other forms of biological and genetic manipulation of human embryos…these procedures are contrary to the human dignity proper to the embryo, and at the same time they are contrary to the right of every person to be conceived and to be born within marriage and from marriage.” (http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19870222_respect-for-human-life_en.html ) The freezing of leftover embryos for future use is also condemned because, “cryopreservation – constitutes an offence against the respect due to human beings by exposing them to grave risks of death or harm to their physical integrity and depriving them, at least temporarily, of maternal shelter and gestation, thus placing them in a situation in which further offences and manipulation are possible.”(Ibid) Additionally, in reference to in-vitro fertilization, this document states that, “certain attempts to influence chromosomic or genetic inheritance are not therapeutic but are aimed at producing human beings selected according to sex or other predetermined qualities. These manipulations are contrary to the personal dignity of the human being and his or her integrity and identity. Therefore in no way can they be justified on the grounds of possible beneficial consequences for future humanity.”(Ibid) As an alternate, the moral and pro-life practice of adoption is encouraged because it allows homeless orphans the chance to experience a loving family. At the same time, it allows an infertile couple the chance to love and nurture a child of their own.
Couples are wrong to use in-vitro fertilization and should instead turn to adoption if they want children because it is ethically correct this way. In-vitro fertilization is a direct attack on human life because it does not respect the dignity of the embryos as humans, but, rather, in-vitro fertilization treat the embryos as scientific experiments. The quoted document on respect for human life courageously defends human life and procreation with God, as it was intended, by condemning in-vitro fertilization, because it is ethically wrong. A more pro-life approach for infertile couples, who wish to have children, would be to adopt rather than try to create their own, for according to the American Pregnancy Association, adopting a child is a short and easy process.
