Genetic Modification
In evaluating the claim that “Genetic Modification (GM) of foods is a harmful and dangerous thing, and should be made illegal”, I have decided that I am against that statement. In describing the reasons why this is so, I will be looking at what GM is, what it is used for, whether we need it or not and what different people think about GM.
Firstly, GM is when a living thing changes or evolves its cell structure. It is a completely natural process, and has been happening since the beginning of our planets existence. Recently, scientists have learnt to control GM, and are increasing its uses frequently, due to what they are learning. They have learnt quite a lot about GM, but have focused on the food aspect. They have been using GM intensely to modify crops. They have made them bigger, tastier, more resistant to pests, etc. However, there is a large debate on whether we really need it or not.
I believe that GM is important to us. This is because we could use it to improve food growth, which in return, provides more food for our ever growing population. Another advantage is the ability to greatly reduce the amount of famine. This will help many stop suffering from the problems of hunger, where food is sparse. This is obviously a good side of GM, and can help save many lives. On the other hand, many people think differently about GM.
Some people like Greenpeace and other organizations, are greatly against GM. This is because they believe that we are negatively affecting nature’s way. They see scientists controlling GM as a harmful act, and have protested against it. They use things like how scientists are shape shifting animals, and the fact they don’t know what the long term affects are, against them. They point out how this could be terrible for the eco-system, and explain that it could destroy life as we know it. They could be right however.
Because there are different views on this subject, it is hard to tell who’s right. Both parties are strong in their beliefs and are determined to have their own way. I think that both parties are right, as much as GM could be a good thing, it is questionable whether everything scientists it is very safe for the environment. As long as there is an even balance and the scientists think immensely about what they are doing, then GM should be allowed.
In conclusion, it’s how GM is to be used which would determine whether it should be legal or not. If it is used for food growth, then it’s good, but if it starts destroying nature, then it’s definitely bad. I am more strongly towards good, because I believe that scientists are careful, and would keep GM under control.
