Einstein on Wormholes and Intergalactic and Time Travel

Time and intergalactic travel have been enshrined in fiction and movies in this era of writing hard science fiction and fantasy. Writers primarily derived much of their plots and subjects from the theoretical results of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity – the foremost tool of the fascinating science of speculative cosmology.

Einstein is famous for his Special and General Theory of Relativity and both provide strong theoretical underpinnings for time travel. The special theory incorporated time to the three dimensional space that we are moving through everyday; hence we can move back and forth in time – time travel bound for the future and back to the past.

In 1916, eleven years after the publication of the special theory, Einstein published the now primary tool of cosmology – The General Theory of Relativity. It presents many sets of mind-boggling mathematical equations called Einstein field equations of which Einstein himself could hardly find the solutions without the help of his contemporary physicists and mathematicians. One of the solutions of these equations is one whose interpretation is the curvature of spacetime – it being the three-dimensional space with the inclusion of time as the fourth dimension.

Interestingly, another solution of Einstein field equations presents the possibility of the existence of a tunnel-like structure that connects the curved spacetime. The American physicist John Wheeler whimsically called it – wormhole. It can be viewed as a shortcut alley connecting remote galaxies. This is just similar to a pair of points situated at a distance on a piece of paper and made pretty much closer by folding the paper.

Wormhole can be traversable and non-traversable kind. In the case of the former, time travel is possible since time is an integral part of spacetime – the arena of all events in the universe. And that, cosmologists claim that the galaxies in our known universe which are distanced as far as millions of light years are connected closest by wormholes, laying down the possibility of intergalactic travel which is a thing of impossibility if viewed within the time context of today. It will take millions of earthbound lifetimes for anyone to be able to reach those galaxies in the farthest recesses of the universe. Besides, our lifetimes being desperately insufficient, our modern technology is nowhere closer from what is required for cosmological travel.

Time travel have always fascinated me. It would be such a convenience that we won’t have to use cars to get to somewhere or just to go back in time to correct a mistake. Well done my friend. Another interesting read. Happy holidays :)

Great article. I guess it depends on a person’s personal beliefs.
Time travel – I am ready to go.

Time travel and space have always fascinated me. If we think it, can it be so?

    Merry Christmas,

I would really be very interesting if time travel and intergalactic travels become reality.

But we are not just traveling through time, we are traveling through space as well, unless you think Jerusalem is the center of the universe. So to travel through time to get to a specific destination such as from a spot on the earth at time A to the same spot on the earth at time B you will need to travel through space as well. I think that this complicates the whole thing quite bit.

“…So to travel through time to get to a specific destination such as from a spot on the earth at time A to the same spot on the earth at time B you will need to travel through space as well.”

That is one of the weirdest parts of quantum mechanics is that if a particle (or any mass whatsoever) could travel faster than the speed of light, it would have infinite mass and thus exist ‘everywhere’ simultaneously. An atom would exist here and at the farthest reaches of time-space at exactly the same time (poor description.) The trick after attaining infinite speed/infinite mass, would be to revert back to finite speed/finite mass to ‘be’ instantaneously at your destination. This is the same approach as the ’serial number’ is taken from particle “A” and stamped into particle “B” thus ‘teleporting’ the “A” to “B”…

-Don’t claim to understand it, just airing what I have read in research articles. What I *really don’t get* is their stating that this ‘teleportation’ is not and never will be like ‘Star Trek’ teleportation, but is in fact a way to ‘…make computers faster…’ THAT is what I fail to understand.

Want to make your computer faster? -Get rid of Microsoft products because in a world without walls or borders, -who needs WINDOWS or GATES? :-p
