Einstein and the Mystery of the Dying Bees
Albert Einstein made some pretty amazing discoveries and was known for his contributions to physics, but he also knew a thing or two about bees, or so he thought.
Albert Einstein once said that ‘if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years to live’.
For the last couple of years the reduction in numbers of honey bees has become very noticeable. This is indeed a threat to human life although most people are not aware of the repercussions. Bees pollinate more than one third of the food that grow around the world. This includes rice, wheat and other grain, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, nuts and a whole list of other foods.

Varroa mite attached to developing honey bee.
The reduction in honey bee numbers has, in the past, been attributed to the varroa mite which embeds itself in the respiratory system of the bee. However, recent research has discounted this as a main cause of the problem.

An abandoned beehive, but where have the bees gone. There are no dead ones here.
Experts have been alerted to the fast disappearance of the honey bees by the large number of deserted hives and they have coined a new phrase to describe the problem: Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD in bees. This literally refers to the abandoning of beehives.

African Honey bees were first found in Southern Texas in 1990 and are now found across the region.
The problem appears to be global and has been observed in USA and Europe, especially in Spain and Poland which have many commercially operating hives. France and Italy banned the use of some pesticides after their beekeepers complained of declining numbers and they do not appear to have been affected in the same way as other European countries, but there is no proof that pesticides are causing CCD in bees.

Healthy honey bees around their hive.
The strange part is that whatever the cause, the bees just seem to disappear. There have been no reports of dead bees being found in hives, which is what you would be expected if the cause was pesticides, or disease. The theories include microbes, and poisonous pollen taken back to the hive by the bees, but this still doesn’t explain where the bees have gone to and why they didn’t die in the hives.

The big problem here is that unless the problem can be identified, it cannot be resolved and if we don’t stop this mysterious disappearance, the honey bees will disappear from our planet.
Then we will see if Einstein, whose other theories and predictions were correct, is right about the bees.

The Bee eaters were being shot here last summer, there were rather a lot around. I wonder if they are not helping the situation? Interesting article.

Very informative article with beautiful pictures. I hope they can get to the bottom of problem soon. This is very important to all mankind. Well done.

spooky, i’m writing on this issue now, too. my friend is a big save the bees girl from way back. did you know this happened to a lesser extent in the 60s, too?
good looking out!

Your information ties into my “24 to be extinct” post of 2 days ago. Great post. We all need honey bees to live.

The reason the bee’s are disappearing is the pesticides we Use on our crops, The Government knows this!! The poison bee goes back to its hive and infects the rest of the hive its a chain reaction!

Very informative, thanks Louie.

Wonderful article Louie, the pics are fantastic. yes we do need bees but i have a great fear of them. i know its a little silly but i do still recognize their value to our planet.

Great article, I have been staying informed about this due to the reprecussion that could occur if the bees are gone forever. Thank you for the read!

Einstien was right. With no pollination there could be no life. We can’t live without food.

Things about Einstein are always interesting.thanks

There’s been a lot of talk about the bees. I feel we as humans need them to survive.

This was a very well written article and this is a very serious subject. I am glad that you chose to write about it. I do hope that we start to find the answers soon as you know the honey bees are vital to agriculture.

They say that CELL PHONES are sending out signals that are confusing the bees. I believe it is not just ONE thing – but many, Cell phones, pesticides, herbicides, pollution, and so much more. Scarey though because if Einstein is right… then what?

This is pretty scary stuff. Four years is not a long time at all. Hope that old Albert was wrong.

Wow that is a very interesting article,
My partner has also noticed that the bee population is also down in Holland. I saw last summer many dying under one particular tree, all dropping to the ground, hundreds of them. I think they are having problems with reproducing and also with changes in temperature of the earth. It was a very warm time and also the birds are suffering here. 2 years ago there was a heat wave here in Holland and birds were literally dropping from the sky. Many smaller bird species were lying dead all over the place. Even when I was just walking around my area, I noticed many of them overheated and one I watched fall from the sky, mid flying. It was so weird to see, it is almost like they are disoriented, or confused.
These coming times of earth changes will make such an impact on all humans, animals and plant life. I’m sure we will see more of it in the coming years ahead…
I have an article, Earth Changes, our bodies and our mind, if you are interested in taking a look on my website at:

very interesting article, thanks . I saw a progamme about a chinese village that is economically dependent on their local produce and the villagers were pollinating plants by hand as their bees had all died – scarey – it obviously took them hundreds of times longer to do this than the bees. It made me imagine a world of sweat shops with rows and rows of children pollinating plants if all the bees die. sorry, bit dark side I know. The programme mentioned that although they don’t know what it is that’s killing them, there was a certain African bee that seemed to be immune to whatever it is. They thought perhaps they could isolate the gene that makes theem immune and genetically modify ones suffering in other countries.. hmmm, it’s good to follow this story, it affects us all. vive the bees!

Unfortunately this is true and I have seen entire bee hives dead on the sidewalks of Pasadena, California, August 2008.

I have a large privet shrub in my garden which is in flower at the moment. This morning i found hundreds of dead bees under it…..i wonder why????????
On July 29, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Interesting, however i dont want to find out if the four day theory of einstien is true. I think we al realize how important honey bees are, but it is gonna be just as important to see if science can get to the bottom of the problem. I wonder if the Africanized variety are killing them off?
