Cryptids – Bigfoot

This article will feature one of the most iconic and popular cryptozoological creatures. He has been in countless movies, video games, TV series, toys, books you name it! Give it up for Bigfoot also known as Sasquatch!

Bigfoot is a large apelike creature spotted in North America and Canada. It is bipedal and often dark in colour, though albino Bigfoot are occasionally reported but mostly in Canada. People that claim to have seen them usually say that they are very human-like, in fact hunters that allegedly have met one say that they couldn’t bare to shoot the creature because it looked so human. Legends of big hairy ape men are found everywhere in the world from South America to Denmark, to Russia to Australia. But is there any truth to the legends? There is no doubt that a significant amount of reports can be explained by cases of mistaken identity, a bear standing upright a dark night can with the help of fear and imagination easily look like a Bigfoot from some distance. But let’s dig into a more interesting theory.

Some people believe that Bigfoot may be the enormous ape Gigantopithecus which the scientific community considers extinct since 300.000 years ago. This enormous ape stood 3 metres tall (9.8 ft) and weighed up to 540 kilograms (1200 lb). This certainly is a very fascinating theory, but could a relict population of Gigantopithecus survive for that long without being discovered? Would they have a sufficient food base and would they be intelligent enough to constantly evade humans? It seems very unlikely, but who knows. There is a bit of truth behind every legend but how much truth there is to Bigfoot is hard to say…
