A Newly Discovered Fungus Could Turn Humans Into Zombies

Scientists researching in the Atlantis rain forest of Brazil led by Penn State University Entomologist Dr. David Hughes discovered a four species of fungi able to turn ants into zombies by colonizing their brain and eventually leading to death. While the study didn’t assess the possibility of extrapolating these findings to humans, evil scientists could actually take advantage of this and create a zombie apocalypse.

A CDC surgeon advised that we be prepared for a zombie apocalypse

We have every reason to be afraid, very afraid. Not long ago an assistant surgeon advised on how to prepare for a zombie apocalypse but now it turns out that scientists discovered a new fungus that could turn humans into zombies. The fungus was named Ophiocordyceps unilateralis by scientists who discovered it in the Brazilian rain forest.

Zombie fungus was discovered in Brazil’s Atlantis rain forest

Researchers have noted that the zombie fungus, as it has been nicknamed, infects ants, takes over their brains, turns them into zombies and later kills them when it moves into an ideal location where it can grow and spread its spores. Even though this was demonstrated in ants, the same can actually be reproduced in the human brain by evil scientists leading to the much talked about zombie apocalypse.

Study was published in PLoS ONE, a peer refereed journal

Scientists led by David Hughes, an entomologist at Penn State University, came across the fungi growing out their victims’ heads in the Atlantis rain forest of Brazil and confirmed this following a few more studies carried out on the zombie ants. The study was published on the 2nd of March in the journal PLoS ONE.

Are we really safe from a zombie apocalypse?

While no mention of extrapolating the same to humans was made, any rogue scientists can ‘benefit’ from this scientific discovery and create numerous zombies leading to an apocalypse. What should we do in case of a zombie attack? What should we do when rogue scientists start turning unsuspecting doctors and other innocent victims into zombies?

God should forbid these species of fungus form getting anywhere near the human brain!

Being a zombie might be fun – nothing to worry, no responsibilities, no deadlines, no debts, no credit cards etc — but very monotonous

LOL! More funny news nowadays, and the funniest part of these kinds of news is the fact that this IS a fact! :D I’m pretty curious to see how this fungus could control the brain of an ant! Will it be zombie apocalypse or will it something like ant attacks? :) Just curious..

All work no play does make Jack a dull boy!!! Have fun don’t become a zombie… The most hardworking creature becomes a zombie when affected by the wrong type of food, in this case a fungus and that can turn a lot of things into various other things not just zombies.
There was a write up about mushrooms that affected the liver and kidneys and killed people in the same manner in the Readers Digest years ago and that taught me not to touch mushrooms which were coloured and the other ones which were white in colour would rather be purchased in shops and eaten.
Its the same like the article you wrote about brains turning to jelly because of cat poop.
It is nothing to do with scientific mutation but yes, with the pollution and environmental damage that we humans are causing I am hardly surprised that we have new strings of DNA forming right here on planet Earth and things that were once healthy suddenly become toxic and start to kill life. Acid Rain due to factory pollution, pollutant in the rivers, all of them have a bearing on treess and if you do check the DNA strains on the trees and that of the fungus, you would see which element of the habitat has actually mutated to cause this problem…
