“It’s So Plane!” Reflection

I have no idea why this is even on here. Basically an IB Learner reflection about a Geometry project I did.

My piece is called Pyramid of Cards. It is basically a group of cards stacked up on top of each other to form a pyramid. Those cards are planes which means that it is a two-dimensional object that with a flat surface.

However, this does represent mathematical properties such as translation where I the patterns are repeated over and over again, just slid elsewhere. In making the pyramid, the floors had to be parallel to each other and the pyramid had to be symmetrical and congruent, or very close to it so it wouldn’t fall over. And finally, there are many angles in the structure such as acute and obtuse angles. There are even transversals cutting through two lines to form alternate interior angles, consecutive angles, and much more! Many mathematical properties exist in my pyramid.

I think that in doing this, I covered three Areas on Interaction. The first of which is Approaches to Leaning. Doing this project was a way for me to learn new things and apply them into a real-world situation where I actually made something that represented some of the things that I had learned. Another area of interaction addressed by my pyramid was Environments. I, a human interacted with the world around me, to create my project, i.e. me interacting with the cards to create a card pyramid. People around the world also do this on a daily basis to build roads, buildings, or even simple Jenga Towers. And finally, the last area of interaction was Human Ingenuity. That is about being creative- clever even. I had to be creative to come up with the idea and figure out a way to solve various problems with my design. For example, how would I stand it up and bring it to school? So, in the end I decided to hot glue gun it and transport it in a cardboard box. Other people, such as scientist, architects, and engineers (but not only them!) also solve problems and have to be creative in their daily lives. Simple things such as building a card pyramid connects to many different people around the world!

There are many Learner Profiles exhibited in doing this project. Though that’s the case, I will be concentrating on a particular one: Thinkers. I chose this profile because I thought it was the most significant of all and encompasses most of what I did in making this. I did have to apply my critical thinking skills in order to make this. There were many steps required to do this starting at thinking about what should I actually do to making it, bringing it in, and finally, typing out this reflection. I also had to make decisions throughout the project such as what I was gonna make, how should I make it, and how would I address other problems that may have came up in putting together my pyramid. As you can see, the profile of Thinking is addressed by many different part of this one whole to actually form a desirable result that I am willing to call mine!

Something as simple as making my card pyramid has global significance as I learned after reflecting on my project. It also touches a lot of different mathematical concepts as well as the Learner Profiles. What a great project?
