Halving Numbers. a Quick Guide to Find Half of a Number

Learn how to quickly work out half of a number.

An easy method to halve a number is to:

STEP A Partition your number, for example, if you are halving 58 break your number into 50 and 8.

STEP B Work out half of each of the numbers in step A.

STEP C Add up all your answers from step B to give the final answer.

Let’s take a look a look at a few examples on halving.

Example 1

Work out half of 68.

STEP A Partition your number.

STEP B Work out half of each of the numbers in step A.

60 → 30

8 → 4

STEP C Add up all your answers from step B to give the final answer.

30 + 4 = 34

Example 2

Work out half of 317.

STEP A Partition your number.

STEP B Work out half of each of the numbers in step A.

300 → 150

10 → 5

7 → 3.5

STEP C Add up all your answers from step B to give the final answer.

150 + 5 + 3.5 = 158.5

Example 3

Work out half of $14.36.

STEP A Partition your number.

STEP B Work out half of each of the numbers in step A.

$10 → $5

$4 → $2

30c → 15c

6c →3c

STEP C Add up all your answers from step B to give the final answer.

$5 + $2 + 15c + 3c = $7.18

Example 4

Last month on Triond, I earned a total of $4.56 off my articles. I share half of my earnings with my partner. Work out how much money my partner receives.

All you need to do here is work out half of $4.56.

STEP A Partition your number.

$4 → $2

50c → 25c

6c → 3c

STEP C Add up all your answers from step B to give the final answer.

$2 + 25c + 3c = $2.28

There are other ways to halve numbers, such as dividing the number by 2, but the above method is a much quicker way.
