# Changing a Percentage to a Fraction. Worked Examples on Percents to Fractions

## In this article, you will be shown how to change a percentage to a fraction.

Changing a percentage to a fraction can be done in 2 simple steps:

STEP 1 Write the percentage as a fraction out of 100. That is, put the percentage on the numerator and 100 on the denominator.

STEP 2 Reduce (simplify) your fraction to its lowest terms.  You will find that many of the fractions cannot be reduced.

Let’s take a look at a few examples on converting percentages into fractions.

Example 1

Change 8% to a fraction:

STEP 1 8% = 8/100

STEP 2 Now, the fraction can be reduced to its lowest terms if you divide the numerator and denominator by 4.

8/100 = 2/25

Example 2

Change 75% to a fraction:

STEP 1 75% = 75/100

STEP 2 Now, the fraction can be reduced to its lowest terms if you divide the numerator and denominator by 25.

75/100 = ¾

75% is widely used in many math questions, so remember that 75% is three-quarters.

Example 3

Change 80% to a fraction:

STEP 1 80% = 80/100

STEP 2 Now, the fraction can be reduced to its lowest terms if you divide the numerator and denominator by 20.

80/100 = 4/5

Example 4

Change 90% to a fraction:

STEP 1 90% = 90/100

STEP 2 Now, the fraction can be reduced to its lowest terms if you divide the numerator and denominator by 10.

90/100 = 9/10

Example 5

Change 17% to a fraction:

STEP 1 17% = 17/100

STEP 2 17/100 cannot be reduced as 17 is prime number and can only be divided by 1 and 17 (17 is not a divisor of 100)

Example 6

On a school trip, 45% of the pupils are girls. Work out the fraction of girls that go on the school trip.

STEP 1 45% = 45/100

STEP 2 Now, the fraction can be reduced to its lowest terms if you divide the numerator and denominator by 5.

45/100 = 9/20
