Statistics are numerical measures that describe a characteristic of a sample.

Statistics started at the beginning of the twentieth century.

We use statistics to compute ( mathematics ), to derive public opinions about a certain product or commodity, to forecast events, to collect data, to make researches, to organize our reasoning about markets, to make decisions and to draw conclusions.

In Basic Statistics you will be studying two parts. The first part is called Descriptive Statistics, while the second part is composed of two branches, Inferential Statistics and Probability.

Outliers are unusual results that appear after a statistical study or experiment.

Before starting the core material of your course, you have to be familiar with the terminology of Statistics. The following are very important key words: Population, Data, Sample, Parameter, Statistic.

I had to take a statistics course as part of my engineering curriculum. I wish you had gone into a little more detail here, but you’ve given a general idea. I suppose people can look up other articles to get more information if they’re interested.
