Adding Time Quickly

For as far back as I can remember, I have always had a knack for not adding times corectly, or at least struggling with it. That is, until I leaned this interesting little trick. If the thought of adding 15 hours and 43 minutes to three hours and 56 minutes frightens you, then this is written for you personally.

The first thing you need to do is determine what amounts of time you were wanting to add together.

The second step is to change the times into digit format, so that each one looks like this: 2 hours and 34 minutes will become 234, while 5 hours and 27 minutes will become 527. Or, for larger numbers such as: 35 hours and 15 minutes it would be 3515. Or: 34257 (342 hours and 57 minutes) No matter how large the amount of time is, convert it into simple digit format.

Next, simply add them together. 234 + 527 = 761.

The last two digits of your answer will be your minutes. So with the above example, your answer would be 7 hours and 61 minutes (761).

Remember, the last two digits of your answer will represent the minutes, all the rest will be hours. In the above example, the minutes equaled 61. Since an hour only has 60 minutes to it, we will convert by using the following trick. Whenever the last two digits of the sum are 60 or greater, add an ADDITIONAL 40 to whatever the sum is. So: 761 + 40 = 801. Your answer is 8 hours and 1 minute.

Let’s do another quick one. 6 h/ 39 m. plus 7 h/ 48 m. 639+748= 1387. Add the ADDITIONAL 40 because the last two digits (87) are greater than 60. 1387 + 40 = 1427. Your answer is 14 hours and 27 minutes.

Good for you, now you can add time like a pro! Now go out and impress your friends and family!

That’s great. Thank you very much.

Can you provide an easy format for adding minutes and seconds?
