Vanuatu Preps for Evacuation as Gaua Volcano May Erupt Soon

Vanuatu is currently prepping for an evacuation of 3000 people. The Gaua volcano has started back up and again recently seen an increase in activity. Now the volcano has begun to release ash plumes.

Officials in Vanuatu are watching the Gaua Volcano very closely. They are currently prepping for a possible evacuation of 3000 locals to Sola on Vanualava island. Eruption activity began at Gaua in November 2009 and then subsided until recently. The volcano has started releasing ash plumes again and may erupt soon.

The activity over the last few months has consisted of some eruptions and ash, but an officer of Vanuatu’s National Disaster Planning Management Office thinks the activity is on the increase. This is why they are quickly prepping for an evacuation. No definite time frame for an evacuation is set. At this time, officials will be watching and waiting to see exactly what the situation will require.

This is nothing new for the residents of Vanuatu. Over the last year, they have experienced evacuations and have suffered from the effects of ash fall and sulphur. Vanuatu is located on the Pacific Rim of Fire, making it prime location for earthquake and volcanic activity.
