Types of Volcanoes
Volcanoes are classified into three types.
There are different kinds of volcanoes. Volcanoes differ in the way they are formed, the type of lava they have, and the kind of volcanic materials they release.
Volcanoes may be classified as follows:
1. A shield volcano has a broad base and a shallow slope. It gives out mainly viscous lava that generally flows from the crater and the sides. The Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii is an example of a shield volcano.

2. A cinder cone volcano has a bowl-shaped crater that rises above a dark lava flow. The steep sides are built by cinder.

3. A composite volcano, sometimes called stratovolcano is formed in a subduction zone when one plate dives under another. A composite volcano has a steep slope and is made of alternating layers of lava, cinder, and ash. Cinder consists of small, jagged pieces of rocks. Mayon Volcano and Mount Fuji are examples of composite volcanoes.
