Top Five Deadliest Earthquakes Ever Recorded

This is a collection of the five most deadliest earthquakes from around the world. Also with the most powerful earthquake.

1. The Shaanxi Earthquake.

This earthquake was by far the most deadliest earthquake. Not the most powerful, by it killed over 840,000 people! It devastated an area over 520 miles and made 20 meter deep crevices in the ground! About 97 countries could feel this HUGE earthquake. Though it was so big, it was only an 8 on the Richtar Scale (1 gigaton).

2. The Tangshan Earthquake

On July 28, 1976 an earthquake hit Tanshan, Hebei. It only lasted 10 seconds, but it was an 8.2 on the Richtar Scale (2.2 gigaton). About 255,000 people died, but the earthquake struck very early in the morning when people were still sleeping. It was small, only about 4 x 5 miles. Since Tangshan was very low-risk of having an earthquake, the building were not earthquake-proof. The total damage was 10 billion yuan ($1.3 billion).

3. The Haiyuan Earthquake

Also called the Gansu Earthquake, 240,000 people died on December 16, 1920 in Haiyuan, Ningxia. On the Richtar Scale, this earthquake was a 7.8 (700 megatons). This earthquake was felt over 125 miles.

4. The Aleppo Earthquake

A 8.5 (2.8 gigaton) earthquake hit Aleppo in northern Syria on October 11, 1138. The whole city and nearby towns were completely destroyed. When  a church fell down, 600 guards and citizens were killed. The total death toll was 230,000.

5. The Indian Ocean Earthquake

Even though this earthquake happened in water, the damage was still massive. It happened on December 26, 2004. The earth was more than 9.1 (32 gigatons), and five tsunamis hit the coastlines. Over $7 billion dollars of damage was done during 10 minutes! Over 225,000 people were killed.

The most powerful earthquake

This earthquake was a massive 9.5 magnitude (178 gigatons). That is equal to 1,000 atomic bombs going off at the same time! Also called the Valvidia Earthquake, it was felt in Valvidia, Chile, and places as far as Hawaii which is over 435 miles away. Amazingly, only 6,000 people died. Less than $1 billion of damage was done.
