The World’s Most Glorified and Bizarre Mega Disasters in the Making

The catastrophes of the world are nearing their evident times of rupture. The deadlines are passing and people are getting nervous about the natural disasters that could take out life as we know it.

Isla de La Palma is located off the west coast of Africa and “has an area of 706 km2 making it the fifth largest of the seven main Canary Islands.” So what’s so alarming about this? La Palma is the most volcanically active island in the chain and it’s also known as the “steepest in the world”.

Geologists have been studying models of previous eruptions and have come to an alarming discovery. If part of the mass structure of the volcano slides into the ocean, it will create a Mega-tsunami close to 900 m. high, moving 500 miles an hour, and measuring 1000 ft waves.

The waves will move over the Atlantic Ocean, fanning out to the reach the entire eastern seaboard. The tsunami will take close to 8 hours to reach the United states, and that time, the waves will grow even larger due to the shallowing of the continental shelf.

The areas at most risk include Miami, the coast of New York, and parts of Boston.

The destruction would be unsurpassed if it hits inland, which it’s slated to do, causing complete terror and extinction 25 km. inland. This will be the worst geological disaster in history, and the question that remains is not if this will happen, but when.

Up to Date News

Scientists are continuously debating the issue of whether this will actually happen. Teams of geologists are retesting scenarios and models to figure out if the flank will really fall into the ocean and whether the wave it creates will actually reach the United states.

“It now seems extremely unlikely, according to the extensive calculations made in 2006 by a research team led by Prof. Jan Nieuwenhuis. The Delft scientists simulated many eventualities, but were unable to find any which would fulfill the catastrophic predictions.” Delft University

Excellent! I have also been following the accounts of earth changes. I believe we are in for some huge surprises.

Great article! I remember my geology prof talking about this when I was a college freshman way back in 1995. It’s a scary idea when you take into thought all the things that could potentially wreak havoc on us as a species. And here we are going about our daily lives, oblivious to it all. I’m with RJ. I want my wubbie..lol!

Very scary. The earth has been changing and in the past few years it is happening more rapidly than ever before. It is hard to believe that our world as we have always known it could be gone in an instant.

    Great article.

    Lauren,

Another great article. I remember watching the destruction caused by the last tsunami. As horrific as it was, I think it woke a lot of governments up to put warning systems in place. It is scary to think what a super-sized tsunami could do. Some of the Science Ch. programs that I have watched were about the ice caps sliding into the ocean and causing mega-tsunamis. It is amazing that ice and fire could produce the same disaster.

Hurrah for an article about this that actually mentions that it’s unlikely! A couple more points:

    a) The landslide will eventually happen, but the tsunami only happens if the trillion tons of rock go all at once. It could equally well slide a boulder at a time for millenia.

    b) Yes, the waves would be huge leaving La Palma, and yes, they get bigger for the last little bit as they approach land, but in between they get much, much smaller as they fan out for about 2,000 miles of ocean. You’re looking at 60ft waves hitting the shore – bad enough, but not 1,000ft.

    c) Steven Ward and Simon Day, the scientists who came up with this theory were sponsored by a firm which sells tsunami insurance in the USA.

    d) Most scientific research is first published in a peer-reviewed journals. “Peer reviewed” means that the publishers get at least two other scientists to give an opinion on the research before it’s published. Ward and Day didn’t bother with that – they went straight to the TV documentary. To the best of my knowledge, there isn’t another geologist who agrees with them.

Thanks for the info Sheila. I think it’s ridiculous how these people are cooking up these catastrophes. What exactly is the purpose, to create world wide terror?

Seems to me there is enough real interesting stuff going on in space. Real scientists are worried about some kind of Sonic wave that we are due for, they say it could very well knock out our satelites and disrupt Cell signals and much more for decades…

We are all actors in this world stage. We all had a part to play in what the world has come to. The question is, do we play the hero or the villain? It is never too late to change roles.
