The impact of an asteroid

This is quite likely. Often we are bombarded with meteorites, but of a size that they pass through Earth’s atmosphere by staying melt or fireballs shooting star.

To cause significant damage and can endanger the human life should be measured from 1.5 km. This kind of impact will occur in half of one per million years, which does not mean that happens tomorrow.

Several weeks ago the news jumped to the impact of an asteroid or comet on the surface of Jupiter (planet in astronomical terms is very close to us) and produced a crater the size of Earth.

What would cause such an impact, the Earth, as you can imagine, there is an explosion equivalent to thousands of atomic bombs. Besides, if an impact on the ocean (which is more than likely, since three quarters of the Earth is water) cause tsunamis that would overwhelm the coast, penetrating to the interior of continents and causing fires and earthquakes.

Vent into the atmosphere large amounts of dust and debris that would hide the sun for months or even years, causing the death of animals and plants. The sudden global warming would lead to the opposite-side-glaciation, by not passing the sun. The earth is cool. I will be sure things in the ink. Finally, a name and a date: Apophis, 2036.

Supervolcanoes

Throughout history and erupted and will do so again. The elevation of 7 feet in recent years have alarmed scientists. If it exploded, its power would be equal to hundreds of atomic bombs. Almost all of North America would crumble and cause a volcanic winter due to the ash ejected, which would cover the sun. Would destroy millions of lives, both human and animal and plant species.

It is not likely to happen in the short term, but who knows?
