Stock Solution for Plastic Cold Procedure

What stock solutions are and why make them.

A stock solution is quite a simple concept once it is explained, else it may be a little confusing. Beginning with the first word of this two word concept, “stock”. Stock is defined as “a supply of something available for future use.”

Stock solutions are the same; they are solutions made in a large quantity so that they are accessible at a later date without having to go to all the trouble of preparing it.

A few solutions that were used in the Methylmthaycrylate Cold procedure are the:

  • MMA I
  • MMA II
  • MMA III
  • Phosphate buffer
  • Monobasic stock
  • Dibasic stock
  • Polymerization mixture

MMA I

Stir for one hour in cold room (4 degree in Celsius) the following ingredients:

  • 120 mL MMA (Merck containing 100 ppm hydrochinion Cat #EM-800590-1VWR)
  • 70 mL butylmethacrylate (Sigma 235865 containing 10 ppm hydrochinion)
  • 10 mL methyl benzoate (AC12634-0250 Fisher Acros)
  • 2.4 mL polyethylene glycol 400

MMA II

Stir for one hour in cold room (4 degree in Celsius) the following ingredients:

  • 200 mL of MMA I
  • 0.8 grams benzoyl peroxide

MMA III

Stir for one hour in cold room (4 degree in Celsius) the following ingredients:

  • 200 mL of MMA I
  • 1.6 grams bezoyl peroxide

Phosphate buffer

For 0.1 M phosphate buffer; create both the monobasic and dibasic solution and add 57 mL 0.2 M Monobasic Stock solution to 243 mL 0.2 M Dibasic Stock solution bringing the pH up to 7.4.

0.2 M Monobasic Stock

Mix together:

  • 27.8 grams sodium phosphate monobasic
  • 1000 mL dH20

0.2 M Dibasic Stock

Mix together:

  • 28.4 grams anhydrous sodium phosphate dibasic
  • 1000 ml dH20

When using stock solutions remember they are sometimes very concentrated and even if it is not very concentrated you will need to dilute the solution to be used in your experiment, procedure, treatment, etc.

Nice one. Do you pour this over chicken or beef and how many will it serve?
